GEOLOGY OF THENI DISTRICT:
The western ghats characterized by Hard Rocks (Chernockite) runs through Periyakulam, Bodinayakkanur and Uthamapalayam Taluks. In Theni and Andipatty small hillocks of Chernockite are available thereby providing Blue metal for the construction industry. Leases are granted for Patta land having hard rocks. In Poramboke lands leases are granted to Mahalir Sangam and the individuals who are participating in Tender cum Auction, the highest bidders will be granted lease thereby high revenue is realized to the District and to the state exchequer.
In addition wind blown deposits of silt and sand are occurring in Bodinayakkanur and Uthamapalayam Taluks.
Besides this Tanks of Public Work Departments and tanks of Panchayats are having silt and earth which are suitable for Brick making are available in Theni District. Leases are granted in Patta lands for Brick making.
The District is endowed with Vaigai river Varattar, Manjal nadhi and streams such as Palloothu odai and other odais and having sand deposits. The vaigai water spread is having large amount of silt, below silt Sand occurs. In these sand bearing areas permission is granted for quarrying to Public Works Departments.

- Mining Leases :-
Major Mineral Limestone occurs which is of inferior grade with high silica content. Three mining leases are granted in Theni District. These are non operative mines because of the poor quality of the mineral limestone.
- Granite Leases :-
The District is having one lease which is in patta lands. The granite is mined only in smallest quantities.
